Next step for ACTSmart – Organic Compost

Posted on May 12, 2011

One step we need to take to achieve our ACTSmart accreditation, is to recycle all our organic waste. Here at Spectrum the best way we have found to do this is with a Bokashi bin.

A Bokashi bin is a compost bin that turns your organic waste into a liquid that can be used on your plants in your garden. You can place all your organic waste into the bin including: fruits, vegetables, meats (cooked and uncooked), fish, cheese, eggs, bread, coffee grinds, tea bags, wilted flowers, and tissue.

The best thing about the Bokashi is that it doesn’t smell! The reason for this is, every time you place your organic waste into the bin, you sprinkle a specially formulated saw dust with bran that has been infused with Effective Micro-organisms, called EM Bokashi. If you would like to know more or find out where to get one please visit their website.
